Tips to Deal with Eczema During the Winter

Winter can be a wonderful time of year. The fun and frightening month of October, exhilarating fireworks on bonfire night, cosy Christmas jumpers and uplifting New Years’ parties. What’s not to love? Events and celebrations should be something to look forward to, but with extended periods of time spent out in the cold dry air it can be a nightmare for under-prepared sufferers of eczema. Eczema is a tough challenge at any time of the year but particularly so in the bitter winter weather. The changes in temperature from outdoors to central heating can put the skin under immense pressure and, as a result, will irritate the skin further.

Here are a few tips to help ease your child’s eczema during the cold winter days and nights.Top tips for deal with eczema this winter from the ScratchSleeves blog

Different Gloves for Different Temperatures

Gloves are a winter staple in everyone’s accessory drawer. When it comes to eczema, it’s not enough to own just one pair. You need to play the weather at its own game. Buy numerous pairs in a variety of fabrics and thicknesses to match the weather condition of each particular day.

Sweating Irritates Skin

You may think that sweating is the last thing your child will be doing during the cold months, but sometimes parents cover up to the point of overdoing it. This will cause the skin to sweat under the heaviness of thick fabrics and layers. When this happens it irritates the skin even more, making the condition worse.

Take Off Damp Clothing

Winter brings with it a steady stream of rain, snow, sleet and hailstones. It’s inevitable your child’s outer layers will get wet at some point. Sitting around in wet clothes and accessories is not ideal for anyone. It can cause illness and is generally uncomfortable. If your child has eczema, this should be avoided where possible as it will only lead to further irritation and discomfort.

Being prepared is a key part of dealing with eczema during winter and will make it that much easier for you and your children.
